Hobbs & Shaw’s first trailer pits two Fast and Furious vets against Idris Elba

The Fast and Furious spinoff stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Jason Statham

The first trailer for Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw brings back the series’ fast-racing action.

On Twitter, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson teased the arrival of the trailer on Wednesday, with a short clip of his character, Agent Luke Hobbs. The film — much like the title implies — follows Hobbs and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), as the duo strikes up an unlikely alliance.

However, the lengthy trailer starts out by focusing on the antagonist of the film, a shadowy figure codenamed “Brixton” who’s played by Idris Elba. (He announces himself as the “bad guy.”) Also featured is Vanessa Kirby, who appears to be an ally for Hobbs and Shaw; you may remember her previous action-heavy role in last summer’s Mission: Impossible - Fallout.

A Fast and Furious spinoff was first announced in 2015, with the focus on the characters of Hobbs and Shaw cemented in 2017.

Helen Mirren, who appeared in a small, uncredited cameo role in The Fate of the Furious as Deckard and Owen Shaw’s mother, will reprise that role. Meanwhile, Johnson’s cousin (and WWE star) Roman Reigns, along with Cliff Curtis, Josh Mauga, and John Tui, will portray Hobbs’ brothers.

Hobbs & Shaw premieres on Aug. 2.
