A 3DS cult fave drops into light Nintendo eShop update

A good time for roguelike fans

It’s yet another tepid week on Nintendo Switch eShop, but the release of beloved vertical shooter Downwell and Advance Wars-style game Wargroove lead a handful of titles worth checking out — as does a lone 3DS game to be excited about from Atlus.

Downwell first launched way back in 2015 on both iOS and Windows PC, becoming a near-instant cult favorite. One-man team Ojiro “moppin” Fumoto drew inspiration from games like Spelunky and Cave Story to craft the unique platformer-meets-roguelike-meets-vertical shooter. Armed just with a pair of gunboots and a strong stomp, the player descends through a lengthy, procedurally generated well in an effort to stay alive. The Switch is the just latest console Downwell has launched on; most recently, it came to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2016.

For something new, there’s strategy RPG Wargroove, which we enjoyed for its wonderful characters and engaging tactical combat. It fills the void left behind by Intelligent Systems’ Advance Wars series, which hasn’t seen a new game release since the Nintendo DS days.

And there’s even one thing for the Nintendo 3DS lovers among us. Atlus, still dedicated to the handheld, releases Etrian Odyssey Nexus this week. It’s the latest in the long-running dungeon-crawling RPG series, and the first new game since 2017.

Below is the full list for the update. And under that, check out Nintendo’s retrospective of the best games to launch on eShop in January 2019.

Update: We’ve clarified Etrian Odyssey Nexus’ release date above.
