In the opening scenes of Netflix’s Stranger Things, four young boys sit around a card table playing Dungeons & Dragons. The vignette helps set the tone for the entire series, foreshadowing much of the narrative arc of its first season. Now the story is coming full circle, thanks to an officially licensed Stranger Things-themed starter set for D&D.
The Stranger Things Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Starter Set showed up on Amazon just yesterday and folks are already rushing to pre-order it.
From the looks of it, the boxed set includes all the same bells and whistles as the last few starter sets published for D&D 5th edition. If you’ve ever been to the Phandalin and back, you know the drill. Expect a slim manual, an adventure for the Dungeon Master’s eyes only, a handful of premade character sheets, and a set of polyhedral dice.
The catch is that the content itself is pulled straight from the opening scene of Stranger Things.
“Experience the D&D adventure Stranger Things character Mike Wheeler has created for his friends,” reads the official product description, shared with Polygon by Wizards of the Coast. “Pick your character — will you be Will the Wise or Dustin the Dwarf? Get your fireballs ready as you investigate the mysterious castle and battle the ferocious Demogorgon. Prepare for just about anything, because the game just got stranger.”
While the text of the Amazon listing is a little garbled, WoTC tells Polygon that there’s plenty of opportunity for some extremely meta role-playing at the table. Best of all, the package comes with two demogorgon miniatures, one of which is left unpainted for you to customize.
Note that D&D’s current miniatures licensee, Wizkids, isn’t listed as a partner on this project. The photos are a little blurry, but here’s hoping the minis are of slightly higher quality than what comes standard with other Hasbro hobby games, such as Betrayal at House on the Hill.
The Stranger Things starter set is available for pre-order now, and ships May 1. Stranger Things season 3 arrives July 4.
Update: We’ve updated the above story with a revised version of the product description from Wizards of the Coast.
