Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - Yondu Marvel Studios/Disney

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is allegedly still happening — though no one can say exactly how, when, where, what or who.

The third installment to the Guardians franchise was put on hold in July 2018, when director and screenwriter James Gunn was fired from Disney, after a far-right group resurfaced a series of Gunn’s years-old offensive tweets. While the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy rallied in their support for Gunn, Disney stood by its decision. Vol. 3 was supposed to have a 2020 release date, and it has since been pushed to 2021, but it’s still on the release calendar.

When speaking to People Magazine in December of 2018, Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, mentioned that Guardians was still happening even without Gunn.

“Our director won’t be with us any longer but we are excited to continue the Guardians of the Galaxy story and keep delivering to the fans,” she said. “That’s the most important thing. I don’t have any details as to when [the next Guardians film will come out] but there’s a script in existence.”

Gunn originally penned the script for Guardians 3, but Gillan did not mention if that script was the very same. Around the same time, Adam McKay (Vice) revealed that Marvel approached him to direct the third Guardians film. His involvement is not solidified, however.

At the Golden Globe awards in January, Marvel president Kevin Feige told an MTV interviewer that “Guardians will happen.” There were no further details on production or who would be stepping in as director.

Most recently, at the premiere of the second Lego movie, Chris Pratt told Variety that Guardians will, indeed, be happening.

“I promise there’ll be a third movie,” Pratt said. “I don’t know exactly what that’s going to look like, but I know everyone on board is just eager to give the fans what they want and wrap up a trilogy in a meaningful way.”

Once again — no details on who will step in, what the movie is about, when it will come out, or anything really tangible. But hey, it’s happening. We guess.

Meanwhile, Gunn is set to write and direct Suicide Squad 2, which will allegedly focus on a new set of characters than the first movie. Most of the cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy series is confirmed to return on April 26, in Avengers: Endgame — at least the ones who didn’t get snapped by Thanos.
