Just a month after Disney shocked the world with Will Smith’s blue Genie, the studio has released more footage of the live-action Aladdin — with a little more context.
Previous teasers revealed the desert kingdom of Agrabah, plucky street rat hero Aladdin, and, of course, the very blue Genie. The full trailer, which debuted on Good Morning America, shows off the movie’s iconic musical sequences and more of Genie’s magical wish-granting powers.
Anyone who grew up in the ’90s or ’00s likely knows the story of Aladdin like the back of their hand. But the live-action version hints at a new direction for some of the characters, particularly hot Jafar and a more outspoken and determined Jasmine. A few new characters join the story, such as Jasmine’s loyal handmaiden Dalia (Nasim Pedrad) and Jafar’s right-hand man Hakim (Numan Acar).
Aladdin is one of the many live-action versions of Disney classics headed to theaters this year. The Tim Burton-helmed Dumbo comes out later this month, and The Lion King premieres on July 19, with a sequel to 2014’s Maleficent coming out on Oct. 18. Aladdin, meanwhile, comes out May 24.
