Double Fine’s next game is Rad, coming to Nintendo Switch

Rad’s neon art direction and mutant powers bring to mind the weird action games of the 1990s

Chris Plante co-founded Polygon in 2012 and is now editor-in-chief. He co-hosts The Besties, is a board member of the Frida Cinema, and created NYU’s first games journalism course.

The next game from Double Fine Productions is Rad. The third-person, top-down action game stars a young boy who battles through a procedurally-generated post-apocalypse by adopting mutant powers. It’s being spearheaded by project lead Lee Petty, the creator of previous Double Fine games Stacking and Headlander.

In the short trailer showed during Wednesday’s Nindies Showcase, the hero navigates a decidedly ’90s-themed wasteland, neon green vegetation sprouting in his wake. He mutates in a variety of ways, growing a snake head and goblin wings, sporting a flaming arm and acid feet, and laying eggs that hatch supporting minions.

The project will be published by Bandai Namco, and is scheduled for a summer 2019 release.
