If you’ve ever watched a monster movie and thought, “I wish there were more monsters in this,” (I’m looking at you, every objectively wrong person who thought the 2014 Godzilla “took too much time getting to Godzilla”), your prayers are about to be answered. Godzilla: King of the Monsters, aka The Monster All-Star Parade, is on its way.
From the first trailer, which used an epic orchestral cover of Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” to the latest, which features a similarly melodramatic version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” the footage released from this May’s new Godzilla movie has promised nothing if not pure monster mana. The newest teaser in particular is comprised of non-stop glamor shots of major monsters — Rodan! King Ghidorah! Mothra! Godzilla! — as they each strut their stuff, and the humans (Vera Farmiga, Bradley Whitford, Millie Bobby Brown, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Kyle “clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” Chandler) slowly come to terms with the fact that they’ll have to ally with Godzilla in order to survive.
At one point during the trailer, the disembodied voice of Detective Pikachu’s Ken Watanabe is heard murmuring, “beautiful,” which we can all agree is absolutely correct when it comes to describing these monsters, whether it’s Ghidorah, bursting Satan-like from a volcano, or Mothra, a wonderful, soft, charmingly patterned giant moth being mercilessly pitted against dragons.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set to hit theaters May 31; in the meanwhile, I will be blowing up every frame of this teaser to hang in my house. Here are some of my favorites, including one of what may just be a Mothra larva. Godzilla, I will see you at the Oscars.
