Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler, the 16-bit-styled, turn-based role-playing game for Nintendo Switch, is getting a sequel — or rather, a prequel, this time for mobile devices, known as Octopath Traveler: Champion of the Continent.
The new Octopath Traveler will retain the trademark “2D-HD” visual style of the Switch RPG, but will focus on a new group of warriors exploring the continent of Orsterra. The mobile game will use touch- and swipe-based controls for its command-based battles. You can watch the first teaser trailer for Champion of the Continent above.
Octopath Traveler: Champion of the Continent will be free to play with in-app purchases, and is described as a single-player RPG. Square Enix says it plans to release the mobile game in Japan this year, but a North American release has not been confirmed.
The original Octopath Traveler was released in July 2018. In our review of the game, Polygon called the RPG a “refreshing take on the genre” that channels the spirit of old favorites, but never feels derivative.”
