The Dead Don’t Die’s first trailer teases another entry in the crowded genre of star-driven zombie films. But there’s presumably more going on beneath the shambling exterior. The film is directed by Jim Jarmusch, the art house luminary known for Down by Law, Dead Man, and Limits of Control.
Jarmusch has riffed on popular genres throughout his career, most notably with the 2013 vampire film Only Lovers Left Alive and the 1999 mob-meets-ninja mashup, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. Similar to those films, The Dead Don’t Die appears to meld traditional Hollywood staging with Jarmusch’s deadpan dialogue and tone.
The Dead Don’t Die partners Jarmusch with some of his recent leads. He previously worked with Adam Driver in 2016’s Paterson, Bill Murray in 2005’s Broken Flowers, and Tilda Swinton in Only Lovers Left Alive. The full cast includes a bundle of other Jarmusch collaborators and indie icons: Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, Sara Driver, RZA, Selena Gomez, Carol Kane, Austin Butler, Luka Sabbat, and of course, the one, the only Tom Waits.
The Dead Don’t Die hits theaters on June 14.
