DC Universe has put out a first trailer for Swamp Thing and, thanks to the influence of producer James Wan, it appears to be a full-on horror series
The live-action adaptation is based on the character of the same name, who is actually the consciousness of scientist Alec Holland combined with a monstrous plant-creature that resulted from a laboratory explosion/restorative formula combination.
Swamp Thing stars Andy Bean as Holland before the transformation and Derek Mears after, but will focus mainly on Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, Holland’s love interest from the comics. Arcane is a doctor with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who journeys to Louisiana in order to investigate a swamp-borne illness. There she meets and bonds with Alec Holland, and though his untimely death cuts their friendship short, Abby begins to suspect he might not be so dead after all.
The trailer starts on a quiet, dark, seemingly peaceful bayou night, before the horror seeps in and then kicks up. Abby pokes around mysterious labs, with ominous figures watching her. There are screaming children, a swamp aflame, a very creepy pig-headed being, and more!
Joining Reed, Bean, and Mears will be Jeryl Prescott (The Walking Dead) as Madame Xanadu, Will Patton (Remember the Titans) as Avery Sunderland, and Virginia Madsen (Dune) as Maria Sunderland.
Swamp Thing will join Doom Patrol and Titans as DC Universe’s live-action offerings. It will premiere on May 31.
