Minecraft movie will premiere in 2022

‘Teenage girl and her unlikely band’ journey to save the Overworld

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

The Minecraft movie has a premiere date — March 4, 2022.

Mojang announced the date in a blog post yesterday. Warner Bros. and the studio have been working on a Minecraft adaptation since 2014, and at one point its director expected it to release sometime this year. But he was replaced earlier this year (by Peter Sollett, of The Path for Hulu) and the clock was apparently reset.

The Minecraft film will be “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers,” Mojang said. “After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”

Aaron and Adam Nee, brought aboard when director Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) left the project in August, are the writers. They’re also said to be working on a Masters of the Universe film adaptation. McElhenney’s original story was supposed to be an adventure in the style of 1985 cult classic The Goonies, but Mojang tossed that idea.
