The latest trailer for Hobbs and Shaw sends a familiar message: family is everything.
The movie plans on stretching that classic Fast & Furious mantra. Family can mean teaming up with your worst enemy (see: Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw teaming up to save the world) or something more literal, like, say, arming your brothers and mother in an all-out Hawaiian war. Even the bad guys in Hobbs and Shaw feel like family; who hasn’t had a playful relative declare themselves Superman before roughhousing? That’s Idris Elba, in a villain role he seems born to play.
Hobbs and Shaw finds Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returning as his Fast Five character Hobbs, and Jason Statham as the vengeful Shaw, first introduced in Furious 7. They team up to take on Elba, whose “cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist” Brixton wants to unleash a deadly virus on the world. Why? That’s what cyber-genetically enhanced anarchists do, man! The problem for our heroes: Brixton is basically “Black Superman” (his words), who solves most of life’s problems through smashing.
Joining Hobbs and Shaw is Shaw’s sister, played by Vanessa Kirby, who is not playing the same character from Mission: Impossible - Fallout, but we can pretend. Helen Mirren, who appeared in a small, uncredited cameo role in The Fate of the Furious as Deckard and Owen Shaw’s mother, is also back. Meanwhile, Johnson’s cousin (and WWE star) Roman Reigns, along with Cliff Curtis, Josh Mauga, and John Tui, will portray Hobbs’ brothers.
Hobbs & Shaw hits theaters on Aug. 2.
