Fly high with Tuca and Bertie, the new show from the studio behind BoJack Horseman

Birds of a feather (get it?)

Netflix’s upcoming animated comedy Tuca and Bertie has gotten a bright, bouncing first trailer.

As the similar art style might suggest, Tuca and Bertie is the latest project from the team behind BoJack Horseman, but the two shows aren’t connected beyond who’s working behind the scenes. Rather than starring a horse who, back in the ’90s, was in a very famous TV show, Tuca and Bertie focuses on a world full of bird and plant people, centering on two 30-year-old bird women living in the same apartment building.

Tiffany Haddish voices the carefree, spontaneous Tuca, while Ali Wong voices the anxious, self-doubting Bertie. Steven Yeun joins the regular cast as Bertie’s boyfriend, with Nicole Byer, Richard E. Grant, and Tessa Thompson in guest roles.

“There are animated shows for adults, but they’re created by men and largely written by men and so they don’t have the themes that I want. They’re not speaking to me,” creator Lisa Hanawalt said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, explaining that she was aiming to create an adult animated comedy that focused on women.

Tuca and Bertie premieres on Netflix on May 3.
