Sega’s esports-focused Puyo Puyo game, which will be known as Puyo Puyo Champions when it comes to North America, will be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC via Steam, and Xbox One on May 7.
Puyo Puyo Champions was announced as Puyo Puyo eSports in Japan in September. The puzzle game features a “strong focus on global online competitive multiplayer,” according to Sega, and uses the rules of Puyo Puyo 2 and Puyo Puyo Fever. Champions also includes a new eight-player tournament mode for local battles and a rich replay system. Players can pick from 24 characters from throughout the Puyo Puyo series.
The Puyo Puyo series has been released under a variety of names in North America, including Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine for Sega Genesis, Kirby’s Avalanche for Super NES, and Puyo Pop. The series crossed over with another classic puzzle game for 2017’s Puyo Puyo Tetris.
Puyo Puyo Champions will cost $9.99.
