Avengers cast sings MCU-themed redux of ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’

‘No we didn’t light it, but we tried to fight it’

We’re in the endgame now, what with Avengers: Endgame just days from release. In case you haven’t had time to binge the other Marvel movies, fear not. The cast of Avengers: Endgame gathered on The Tonight Show to recap the MCU.

The twist? The recap is in the form of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” — but with the lyrics tweaked to reflect the culmination of 10 years’ worth of MCU movies, all 22 of them. It’s not just the celebrities singing along, but little clips from the movies and images from the comics, all coming together in a very colorful frenzy.

While most of the lyrics get an update (“Bucky, Peggy, I love you!” for instance), the chorus remains the same and is quite fitting. For the record, it is as follows:

We didn’t start the fire
It was always burning
Since the world’s been turning
We didn’t start the fire
No we didn’t light it
But we tried to fight it

Seems pretty fitting for this group of extraordinary people who more often than not have to clean up messes and save the world. The song then starts to list the villains and epic battles, hammering the point home with the force of Mjolnir.

At the end of the song, the camera pans back, revealing that the comic panels and pages and movie clips are part of a Stan Lee collage. Feel a tug at the ol’ heartstrings yet?

Avengers: Endgame will be released on April 26.
