The 72nd Annual Cannes Film Festival is taking place from Tuesday, May 14, 2019 to Saturday, May 25, 2019 in Cannes, France. The international event aims to promote the importance of film and development of cinema, both beaming out of Hollywood and throughout the international scene. Yes, there’s more to movies than whatever Marvel’s cooking up behind closed doors.
Cannes is known for prestige and immaculate presentation, and annually attracts the top talent from around the world. This year’s slate includes new film from Terrence Malick (A Hidden Life), Jim Jarmusch (The Dead Don’t Die), Pedro Almodóvar (Pain & Glory), Ken Loach (Sorry We Missed You), and Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), as well as major premieres for everything from Rocketman to Jessica Hausner’s Little Joe. If Cannes sounds stuffy, realize that Cannes also has it all.
This year’s competition jury was also stacked. Joining jury president Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu were actresses Elle Fanning, director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), actress Maimouna N’Diaye, director Kelly Reichardt (Wendy & Lucy), director Alice Rohrwacher (Happy As Lazzaro), director Robin Campillo (120 BPM), designer Enki Bilaland, and director Paweł Pawlikowski (Cold War).
Below we’ve compiled a list of our favorite films, events, and stories that emerged from this year’s festivities.
