Tumblr unveiled a new mini documentary series, Explore What You Love, made up of five episodes, each focusing on a different type of Tumblr user: a high-profile member of the Star Trek fandom; the activists around #BlackoutDay; an artist who grew his career through Tumblr; a fashion blogger turned creative director; and friends who met each other via the distinct community space Tumblr offers. The first episode — featuring author and artist — Adam J. Kurtz (known by his internet username AdamJK) can be viewed above, and the other short videos are available on the Tumblr blog for the series.
Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has served as a hub for fandom (particularly when bans on LiveJournal caused an exodus to the alternative social platform) and has created many niche communities across its signature navy blue dashboard.
The blogging platform caused an uproar in December 2018, when it announced it would ban visual adult content. Despite many logging off and not returning to Tumblr, its most loyal still remain on the platform, where they’ve found a community hard to replicate elsewhere. The docuseries highlights the specific idiosyncrasies of Tumblr — while also serving as a reminder that, yes, people are still on it.
