A first-person horror game set in the Blair Witch universe was revealed today, coming to Xbox One and PC on Aug. 30, 2019. It is called, simply, Blair Witch.
The debut trailer featured some of the spooky gameplay, which seems to be set in the forest where the original Blair Witch film took place. While it appears to begin as a simple adventure game, it quickly takes a horrifying turn, as demonic creatures attack a man and his dog.
“It’s 1996. A young boy disappears in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland,” says the official press release. “As Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, you join the search. What starts as an ordinary investigation soon turns into an endless nightmare as you confront your fears and the Blair Witch, a mysterious force that haunts the woods.”
It looks like the entire game will maintain this first-person perspective, following on the heels of other modern horror games like P.T. and Outlast. Blair Witch will be developed by Bloober Team, the developers behind Layers of Fear and Observer, both of which are psychological horror games. Blair Witch doesn’t appear to be much of a departure for the team, but it will be interesting to see how the developer does with an existing franchise.
