Lupin III looks surprisingly great in his CGI movie debut

Long live Arsène Lupin III!

Infamous fictitious criminal Arsène Lupin III has stood the test of time across decades, mediums, and technological shifts. Now, the heist-master has crossed over from his characteristic and long-standing 2D animation style for a CGI film that looks ... pretty great, actually!

The trailer for Lupin the Third: The First brings together the classic cast of Lupin III. Aside from Lupin himself, there’s Jigen, the pinpoint-accurate gunman (who, in the CGI version, seems to have gotten a beard trim); Goemon, the prideful swordsman; Fujiko, Lupin’s sometimes partner, sometimes rival; and Inspector Zenigata, Lupin’s eternal pursuer. The trailer features plenty of unbelievable Lupin stunts, ranging from car chases to dogfights, and we even catch a glimpse of Lupin’s yellow Fiat. Of course, the trailer wouldn’t be complete without an arrangement of Lupin III’s iconic theme.

Titled Lupin the Third: The First, the film is directed by Takashi Yamazaki (Stand by Me Doraemon) and produced by Toho Animation. The film comes 40 years after the classic Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, which was Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s theatrical debut.

Lupin the Third: The First will hit theaters in Japan on Dec. 6. No plans have been announced for an international release.
