If there’s one movie you see this year, make it Parasite.
Things are revving up for the Palme d’Or winner’s stateside release, with the official U.S. trailer revealing a little more of exactly what the film is about.
Director Bong Joon-ho is known for interweaving seemingly incompatible tones and genres, and Parasite is no exception to the rule, infusing what could be described as a thriller about two families whose lives intersect with a vein of pitch-black comedy. One wealthy, one destitute, the families become intertwined with each other when the son of the latter becomes employed at the household of the former. As simple as that might sound as a premise, there’s much more to Parasite than meets the eye.
The film now marks the fourth collaboration between Bong and actor Song Kang-ho, who plays the patriarch of the penniless Kim family. Jang Hye-jin, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam star as his wife, son, and daughter, with Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, and Lee Jung-eun rounding out the cast.
Parasite will hit theaters stateside on Oct. 11.
