The trailer for Studio Trigger’s Promare is a visually stunning flame fest

Gainax veteran Hiroyuki Imaishi brings the heat

The new anime film Promare is about the most exciting firefighting you’ll ever see in your life, and the full U.S. trailer, debuting exclusively on Polygon, gives us a glimpse of the action. Produced by Studio Trigger, known for titles like Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia, the film hits theaters in the US this September.

Burnish, a race of pyrokinetic mutants, once destroyed half of the world. Thirty years later, the Burnish are gone, for the most part, until a new group of aggressive mutants who call themselves “Mad Burnish” appears. A battle between Galo Thymos, a new member of the anti-Burnish rescue team “Burning Rescue,” and Lio Fotia, the leader of the new group of mutants, ensues.

For director Hiroyuki Imaishi, who started his career working on Neon Genesis Evangelion, before directing animation on FLCL, Diebuster, and various Trigger projects, Promare is the payoff of a life lived in the trenches of anime.

“[Studio Trigger] leveraged past experiences into this film, so I can say this is close to the culmination of our works,” Imaishi said in a statement. “Including starting the company called Trigger, this project is like a full culmination.”

Promare is the first feature-length film from Studio Trigger, which describes it as the “spiritual successor” to many of Imaishi’s previous series like Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill. The film, which uses a cel-shaded visual style, looks like it will be just as visually stunning as Imaishi’s other works.

GKIDS will release Promare in select theaters on Sept. 17 (dubbed) and Sept. 19 (subbed) as a special event, with a limited release on Sept. 20. Visit the film’s site for full release details.
