Goodbye, Westeros. Hello, The Eternals.
After rumors surfaced late on Friday, news out of the D23 Expo confirms that Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dane Whitman in the Eternals. Also joining the cast of The Eternals is Gemma Chan as Sersi. Chan previously played Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel.
Harington portrayed Jon Snow on Game of Thrones since season 1’s debut episode in 2011. Beyond his time on the Wall, the actor’s filmography has been relatively light. He parlayed his Thrones stardom into a leading man role in the 2014 historical action film Pompeii and voiced Eret in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. He notoriously appeared in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which was kind of weird. A few British limited series and indie film roles filled in his Thrones break time. But with the HBO series behind him, the man needs work, and he certainly found the highest profile option with Marvel.
Harington is the latest Thrones actor to get sucked into the MCU. Previously, Natalie Dormer appeared briefly in Captain America: The First Avenger, while Peter Dinklage appeared in Avengers: Infinity War as Eitri, the dwarf of Nidavellir, aka the guy who makes Thor’s axe.
Here’s a shot of the cast on stage, in front of an image of their costumed characters, at D23.
