The first trailer for Todd Phillips’ Joker — which the director says won’t follow the comics at all — gave us a good look at the upcoming film, with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and a brief glimpse of Robert De Niro setting it firmly in Scorsese/King of Comedy territory. The exact plot, and whether or not we’ll get to see any members of the Wayne family, remained unclear.
The new trailer for DC Entertainment’s big fall release moves past establishing a tone and provides us a few more details as to exactly what Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) is going through as he attempts to forge a career in stand-up comedy and care for his mother Penny (Frances Conroy).
Set to Stephen Sondheim’s “Send In the Clowns,” the trailer gives us a first look at Thomas Wayne (Brett Cullen), Batman’s dad, as well as more on Robert De Niro’s talk show host, Murray Franklin, who makes fun of Arthur’s stand-up routine on TV. By the end, Arthur — in Joker make-up — gets another shot, this time on Franklin’s show.
The new trailer also features more of Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, Arthur’s love interest, as well as brief glimpses of Marc Maron, Bill Camp, and Shea Whigham.
Phillips has said that he expects people to get mad about the film, which will make its world premiere on Aug. 31 at the Venice International Film Festival before playing the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and opening in theaters on Oct. 4.
