Queen & Slim trailer dives into the movie’s emotional crux

It’s more than just a “black Bonnie and Clyde”

Melina Matsoukas, the director behind iconic music videos such as Beyoncé’s “Formation” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” makes her feature debut this November’s Queen & Slim. Centered around a couple on the run, a new trailer for the film dives into the emotional core of the story — and touches on the fight that the two lead characters have inspired.

After a police encounter goes horribly wrong, the pair — a retail worker (Black Panther and Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya) and a defense attorney (Jodie Turner-Smith, in her first starring feature-film role) — find themselves on the lam from the law. But a recording of the incident becomes viral, and the couple become a symbol of trauma across the country. Not exactly the best thing for when you’re trying to outrun the police.

With a script from Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe (Netflix’s Master of None), Queen & Slim also stars Bokeem Woodbine, Indya Moore, and Chloë Sevigny. Matsoukas and Waithe are producing the film, as well as James Frey (upon whose idea Waithe’s screenplay is based), Andrew Coles, and Michelle Knudsen.

Queen and Slim hits theaters on Nov. 27.
