HBO’s Watchmen trailer shows the dangers of the mysterious ‘Kalvary’

‘If I told you about it, your head would explode.’

HBO’s Watchmen series, based on the groundbreaking graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, is fast approaching, and has a new trailer to show for it.

The new footage focuses harder on the story of the new show than those before it, outlining the Seventh Kalvary — a group of domestic terrorists who wear Rorschach-like masks — and the efforts of masked police officers to combat them. We get quite a few shots of Jeremy Irons’ (still merely presumed) Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, as well as the series’ lead, the masked police detective Angela Abar, played by Regina King.

There’s also any number of things that call back to deliberate moments in the Watchmen graphic novels, some clearly deliberate, like Nite Owl’s Owlship, and some less so — butterflies under a dome, the use of symmetrical visual motifs.

One character tells Detective Abar that “There’s a vast and insidious conspiracy. If I told you about it, your head would explode.” Which, it’s hard to ignore, is exactly what happened to Rorschach, after he uncovered a vast and insidious conspiracy.

Watchmen will premiere on HBO on Oct. 20.
