British director Ben Wheatley has signed on to direct the sequel to the 2018 film Tomb Raider, Deadline reports. Wheatley is best known for his horror and thriller films, as well as black comedies and satires. The Tomb Raider sequel is set to premiere on March 19, 2021.
Alicia Vikander will be reprising her role as Lara Croft. The previous movie starring Vikander came out in 2018 to mixed reviews, though many praised Vikander’s take on the iconic video game character. The 2018 Tomb Raider did fair better than the 2001 Angelina Jolie-led Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which sits at a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Wheatley is best known for psychological horror movies Kill List and A Field in England. He also directed the dystopian High-Rise and action comedy Free Fire.
In addition to Tomb Raider, Wheatley’s upcoming works include an adaptation of Daphne Du Meir’s gothic novel Rebecca for Netflix. Amy Jump, Wheatley’s collaborator on High-Rise and Free Fire, is set to pen the script for the Tomb Raider sequel. Production will begin next year.
