Modern Warfare revives Grind, the risky alternative to Kill Confirmed

It’s time to start hunting dog tags

Infinity Ward has added a new game mode to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that combines the tactical pace of objective modes with the frantic running and gunning of Team Deathmatch. The mode is called Grind and, while it has been in Call of Duty games in the past, this is its first appearance in 2019’s Modern Warfare.

Grind first appeared in Call of Duty: Ghosts, and since then has cropped up in other games in the series, sometimes under alternate names like Stockpile and Fracture. The mode is a combination of the series’ Kill Confirmed and Hardpoint modes, in which enemies drop dog tags when they are killed by opposing players.

Players have to collect those tags and bring them to a specified destination in order to score points. Both teams must return tags to the same areas to score points, which makes those areas on the map highly contested. The drop-off locations also periodically change as the each match progresses.

Players can collect more than one dog tag at a time, but they’ll drop them all if they’re killed before turning them in, making every run to the scoring location a matter of risk versus reward. You can also collect the dog tags of your own fallen teammates, denying the enemy players their score.

Grind is available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare now. It’s unclear if the mode is a permanent addition to the game, or a temporary feature of the game’s first season. Grind has replaced the Drop Zone mode, which was available for about a week.
