These are your 2020 Oscar nominees

Compared to all the hullabaloo surrounding last year’s Oscars, this year’s awards season has been pretty quiet in terms of drama. The ceremony, scheduled for Feb. 9, will again be hostless (can’t cancel a problematic host if there is no host, amirite?); none of the Best Picture contenders have any real Green Book-esque scandals attached to them; and there is no Popular Film kerfuffle. Instead, the heat around the 2020 Oscars revolves around the absolutely cutthroat competition between worthy films.

Announced Monday morning, this year’s Academy Awards nominees include some sweeping heavy hitters in the Best Picture list, with totally-not-a-comic-book-movie Joker leading the pack with 11 nominations. 1917, Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, Jojo Rabbit, and The Irishman were right behind it, while smaller contenders like Little Women, Marriage Story, Ford v Ferrari, and Parasite snuck in where it counted.
