Update: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s new character has been revealed: Byleth from Nintendo Switch role-playing game Fire Emblem: Three Houses. You can watch a replay of today’s livestream above.
Original story: The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster is growing, and game director Masahiro Sakurai will reveal a new fighter for the Nintendo Switch fighting game today. In a 35-minute video presentation, Sakurai will both unveil that new challenger and offer an in-depth look at how the character plays.
You can watch today’s presentation, via YouTube, right here starting at 9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT.
The new character will be the fifth (and presumably final) downloadable fighter included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Fighters Pass. Nintendo has promised five challenger packs — each one containing a new fighter, a new stage, and additional music tracks — in the Fighters Pass, which costs $24.99. To date, Nintendo has released Joker from Persona 5, Banjo-Kazooie, Hero from Dragon Quest, and Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury as add-on content for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
But Sakurai and company aren’t done with Ultimate. In September, Sakurai said that post-release development of the Switch fighting game will continue with additional characters after the Fighters Pass is complete.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released on Nintendo Switch in December 2018. It’s the biggest Smash Bros. game to date, with more than 80 playable characters, including the quintet of DLC fighters.
