Fruits Basket season 2 returns this spring, catch up with this teary recap

Relive the highlights of the first season and try not to tear up at your desk

The Sohma family will return this spring in season 2 of Fruits Basket.

In case that’s too far away for you — or in case you want a refresher of just what happened last season — a seven-minute trailer/recap dives into highlights of each character’s arc, with glimpses of what’s going to happen in the second season.

A fresh revamp of the 2001 anime of the same name, the new Fruits Basket more closely follows the manga it is based on. Think of it as the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to Fullmetal Alchemist.

Plucky and absent-minded Tohru Honda ends up living with the mysterious Sohma family. She discovers the family secret: When hugged by a member of the opposite sex, they turn into zodiac animals! How cute! Well, except there’s definitely something darker at play here, considering how those afflicted with the curse end up alienated from families and potential love interests and controlled by the enigmatic family head, Akito.

But hey, Tohru manages to inspire them to look on the bright side and reconnect with those they love. An orphan who always puts others before her own needs, she has her issues too, and they work through everything together.

The trailer part of this recap, though, definitely focuses on the dark side of things. Akito’s power over the family is highlighted in particular. There are lots of worried faces and dark rooms, and some pretty creepy laughter from Akito.

Season 2 of Fruits Basket is set to premiere in April. As with last season, it’s likely that episodes will air subbed on Crunchyroll and dubbed on Funimation.
