Carol Danvers will officially return in another solo film, though directors and writers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will not, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Instead, Megan McDonnell, a staff writer on the upcoming Disney Plus original WandaVision, will pen the script. WandaVision is McDonnell’s first major writing credit.
Boden and Fleck, meanwhile, are rumored to direct an upcoming Disney Plus series. Marvel is reportedly searching for a female director for this sequel, which is expected to come out in 2022. It will reportedly be set in the present day.
The $1.1 billion worldwide box office haul for 2019’s Captain Marvel — the MCU’s first woman-led stand-alone film — meant that a sequel was most definitely happening. A slight tease at San Diego Comic Con promised more of Carol Danvers.
We last saw Carol at Tony Stark’s funeral at the end of Avengers: Endgame. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker inquires about her whereabouts, to which Nick Fury (or, at least, a Skrull in disguise as Nick Fury), says, “Don’t you dare invoke her name!” So what could Carol be up to now? Likely off-world adventures, especially if the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home is any indication.
Brie Larson will reprise the role of Carol Danvers. No word yet on whether Goose the Flerken will appear.
