Nioh 2 gets a new story trailer, 3 post-launch DLC packs

Jump back into the world of yokai and samurai

Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

Nioh 2 developer Team Ninja revealed a new story trailer and the season pass for its upcoming sequel to 2017’s samurai vs. demons game, Nioh.

The trailer reveals a new set of characters on a journey through Japan. Nioh 2 is set in 1555 — 45 years prior to the original Nioh. Players act as Hideyoshi, a demon hunter that’s part human and part yokai. Team Ninja’s creative director, Tom Lee, teased more of the plot’s mysteries on the PlayStation Blog on Thursday morning.

“Calamity strikes one day as our protagonist loses control of their own yokai power while battling against a ferocious fiend,” Lee wrote. “However, the dire situation is remedied by a wandering merchant by the name of Toukichiro who sells strange ‘Spirit Stones;’ magic—imbued artifacts that can help the wielder communicate with yokai spirits.”

As Hideyoshi, players will travel the world, meet new heroes, and collect the mysterious Spirit Stones — keeping them safe from an unknown enemy.

Lee also revealed that Nioh 2 will eventually feature three downloadable content packs. Each DLC will add new stories, weapons, abilities, and characters. The DLC packs are all prequels to Nioh 2’s main storyline, and come bundled together in the Nioh 2 season pass.

The season pass comes as part of the Nioh 2 Digital Deluxe Edition, which will cost $79.99, according to the PlayStation Store. Team Ninja will release Nioh 2 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive on Mar. 13.
