There’s a novel and particularly sadistic, user-created trap room in Fallout 76 — a schoolhouse where players burn to death if they don’t correctly answer math problems.
“Math Camp,” as redditor Vault101manguy calls it, combines Saw and sophomore-year algebra into a nightmare worse than both. Curious players who enter the schoolhouse, a C.A.M.P. site constructed by Vault101manguy, find the door quickly locked behind them. He gives them enough time to read the trap room’s instructions, which are written on the walls. But after that, he throws a switch and fills the room with fire. The only way to escape is to punch a keypad whose combination is the correct answer to the problem 230 x 10 + 2.
The trap room was announced in the Fallout 76 subreddit yesterday. Eurogamer spied it and a Bethesda Softworks community manager this morning complimented the creator: “This is awesome! Another genius CAMP, haha.”
Vault101manguy shows his homework (heh) in the Reddit post, showing the lengths he went to to torture others. My favorite device is the use of a single bloatfly, whose nettlesome attacks cause enough damage to prevent the victim from fast traveling the hell out of the trap. “Nothing burns brighter than the hope of survival,” writes Vault101manguy. True that!
This video shows the trap working (from the creator’s perspective).
“Most players thought this camp was really funny and interesting and many came back to try again if they lost,” Vault101manguy added. And players who have died are allowed to retrieve their gear afterward as a good-faith gesture of fun.
But it bears warning, if you see a schoolhouse out in the Appalachian wasteland, don’t enter it unless you know your order of operations.
