Hearthstone’s Solo Adventures have arguably been the best part of the card game in 2019. The story campaigns offer a more puzzle-oriented, roguelike approach to Hearthstone’s usual card-combat formula. The final Solo Adventure for Year of the Dragon, Galakrond’s Awakening, will arrive on Jan. 21, bringing a yearlong story to an end that began with April’s Rise of Shadows and continued with Saviors of Uldum in August.
Galakrond’s Awakening takes place in the Northrend region of Dragonblight. World of Warcraft players know this region from the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, where they could explore Dragonblight and find the giant skeleton of Galakrond, an enormous protodrake. Now, that skeleton comes to life and takes a starring role in the culmination of Hearthstone’s Year of the Dragon storyline.
There will be 24 encounters, split across two campaigns. One will have players take the role of the League of EVIL, the protagonists of Rise of Shadows, and the second campaign will star the Explorers’ League attempts to save Dragonblight.
Both Rise of Shadows and Saviors of Uldum offered unique classes for players to experiment with, along with a roguelike deck-building system that offered multiple points of choice between random options to strengthen the player’s deck throughout their run.
Galakrond’s Awakening returns to Hearthstone’s original Solo Adventure format, which featured in earlier campaigns like 2014’s Curse of Naxxramas. These campaigns gave players a pre-built deck to use for each unique boss encounter.
Running through the story campaigns and defeating bosses unlocks a total of 35 new cards that the player can use in competitive modes. Upon completing both campaigns for the first time, players can then unlock a Heroic mode, which features harder versions of the same bosses. In order to deal with the increased challenge, players will be able to build their own decks out of their libraries.
Galakrond’s Awakening will drop in four installments, released weekly, with the first one starting on Jan. 21. Each installment will have two chapters, one for each campaign. The first installment will be free; the rest can be purchased for 700 in-game gold or a $20 bundle.
