Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone get Verdansk dark mode, Zombie Royale for Halloween

OK, this trailer is sincerely scary

Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

On Oct. 20, Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare’s Halloween event officially begins. The Haunting of Verdansk will include new game modes, rewards, and skins from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Saw. The event runs from through Nov. 3.

Perhaps the biggest inclusion in this Halloween event are the bundles themed after the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Saw movie franchises, which include Leatherface and Billy the Puppet skins.

Saw fans can also earn a special throwing knife called The Phlebotomozier, an assault rifle blueprint, a shotgun blueprint, a Cargo Truck skin, a tricycle charm, and “four other pieces of personalization content.” All of this is seemingly only available via the bundle.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre fans also get a bundle, which includes a ton of items themed after the series. Players can pick up the Leatherface skin, the Family Heirloom LMG blueprint (which apparently has a unique, chainsaw-esque stock on the end), the Anybody Home melee blueprint, an SMG blueprint, a vehicle horn, and “five additional Texas Chainsaw Massacre-themed items.”

There is also a bundle themed after a character named Dr. Karlov, which includes a new skin, two electricity-themed weapon blueprints, a throwing knife, a vehicle skin, and more. The store will include some creepy Call of Duty-themed bundles as well.

The Halloween update also features some major gameplay updates, including a new weapon and some game modes.

The JAK-12 is a new automatic shotgun, and it fires faster than any of the other shotguns. There are also unique attachments for the JAK-12, including explosive rounds and a giant, 32-round magazine. The JAK-12 comes from an in-game challenge, or players can buy its unique blueprint — Lacedaemon — in the in-game store.

In Warzone, players can experience Verdansk in the dark, making it much harder to see enemy players without special optics. The dark Verdansk also includes a ghost train, a cameo from Billy the Puppet, and the specter of Leatherface, just to give players a few scares.

Warzone also has a new Zombie Royale mode, which is exactly what it sounds like. When players die in Zombie Royale, they return to life as zombies. They cannot shoot people, but they can run super fast, jump super high, punch super good, and see in the dark super well. And if a zombified player kills enough enemies, they can respawn in their human form.

In all Warzone modes, players can find special Trick or Treat loot boxes. These can include the Return to Dust assault rifle blueprint, The Cleaver melee blueprint, a bunch of other cosmetic rewards, or a fun scare just to make players jump. There are 16 total rewards in the Trick or Treat loot box, and players who find them all will also pick up the Pumpkin Punisher assault rifle blueprint.

Modern Warfare’s multiplayer offerings will also see a Halloween update. Players on a three-kill killstreak or higher will see their head turn into a glowing jack-o-lantern. And if they hit 10 kills, the pumpkin head will light itself on fire. There are also some fun cosmetic changes in-game, like scarecrows on Domination points and skulls in Kill Confirmed.

Modern Warfare will also see two new modes. Onslaughter spawns a Juggernaut suit in the middle of the map, and squads will need to escort their Juggernaut to a goal. And the Juggernaut’s head will, of course, be a jack-o-lantern. Snipers Only isn’t particularly creepy, but it is part of this event. Players can only use snipers in this team deathmatch mode.
