Baldur’s Gate 3 update fixes cutscene bugs, gives smooch stats

A big, welcome change for cutscene framing

Baldur’s Gate 3 is progressing through early access, with Larian Studios frequently updating players on bug fixes and development progress. On Tuesday, the team posted an update for the newest patch. This one has a very nice improvement: Cutscenes are now framed properly.

Before, goblins would hunch their necks dramatically to get into frame, or the camera would pan out — or perhaps show nothing at all! Obviously, this is a hurdle to enjoying a big narrative game, and it’s something I regularly experienced during my hours with the game. Larian have addressed this, along with a host of smaller things, like save game screenshots being too dark, or certain doors being closed (or open, as appropriate.)

The developers shared some interesting stats as well. Gale, the mage, is the most romanced companion. 33% of players selected Gale, but the cleric Shadowheart came in second, with 31% of players selecting her. 1.37% of players chose to turn everyone away and snooze alone, which is fair, since the entire cast of characters has some baggage. Personally, I’m here for Astarion, because I love his hammy ways.

In more cheerful news, the player’s dog has been petted 400K times. That’s a lot! By the time this game leaves early access, that very good boy will have earned millions of pets if we continue at the same rate.

In the game’s first major choice, it looks like only about 25% of players chose the more “evil” choice, so that’s heartening, as it means 75% of players chose to be benevolent. Then again, since progress will wipe and the game isn’t complete, perhaps we’ll see a different balance as the game releases and people start their proper, finished run.
