First Monster Hunter movie teaser pits Milla Jovovich against a Black Diablos

Here’s the first look at Paul W.S. Anderson’s take on the Capcom franchise

One of the big question Monster Hunter fans have about director Paul W.S. Anderson’s take on the franchise is pretty simple: What do his monsters look like?

We finally got a taste of Anderson’s rendition on Saturday, thanks to a clip released at Comic Con Russia. In the brief look at the film, star Milla Jovovich, playing a character named Lt. Artemis, comes face to face with a Black Diablos.

Black Diablos are pretty gnarly monsters, and can often be one the series more memorable fights. In the Monster Hunter games she’s appeared in (yes, apparently all black Diablos are female Diablos, and their color changes while they are in heat), the Black Diablos can buy in sand and ambush her opponents with giant horns or a tail swipe. Here’s some gameplay from Monster Hunter: World for comparison.

Along with Jovovich, Monster Hunter stars Tony Jaa, T.I., Ron Perlman, Diego Boneta and Meagan Good. Capcom also just announced the next iteration in the franchise, Monster Hunter Rise, for Nintendo Switch.

After moving back to April, Monster Hunter is now officially headed to theaters on December, according to teaser. Be sure to tune in to Polygon’s New York Comic Con coverage next week, where we’ll be hosting an exclusive new 1:1 interview with Anderson along with another sneak peek.
