Doctor Strange, and therefore Benedict Cumberbatch, has a significant role in the next Spider-Man movie, The Hollywood Reporter reported on Thursday. The Sorcerer Supreme is expected to be a mentor for Spidey, and will give Tom Holland a chance to perform alongside more seasoned actors.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Cumberbatch’s next Doctor Strange movie, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, begins filming this month in London, with Spider-Man 3 starting sometime this month in Atlanta. It’s unknown where Cumberbatch will do his scenes.

Doctor Strange’s appearance may help explain why Jamie Foxx is coming back as Electro. Foxx/Electro appeared in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which starred Andrew Garfield as Ol’ Webhead. Taken together in a continuity with Multiverse of Madness, and Disney Plus’s surreal WandaVision, it makes Mysterio’s mention of a multiverse in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home a little more portentous.

THR said both Marvel and Sony declined comment on their scoop. The third Spider-Man film (as yet untitled) with Holland in the title role will premiere Dec. 17, 2021.
