In 2021, Elite Dangerous, the spaceflight sim from Frontier Developments, will see its first premium expansion in more than five years, and players on PC can take a head start getting ready for it when the Epic Games Store makes Elite Dangerous free beginning next week.
The game, which has expanded several times following its launch in 2014, gives Epic Games Store members the game with its 2015 Horizons season of content — which allowed players to take their adventures to the surface of (atmosphere-less) planets and explore them in wheeled rovers. Horizons was made into a free update to the base Elite Dangerous game on all platforms at the end of October.
Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will be the next full-size expansion, and so far is scheduled for early 2021. Frontier Developments announced it in early June. The developer said Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will add landings on atmospheric planets, as well as combined-arms combat involving starships, surface vehicles, and players on the ground.
Elite Dangerous will be available free from Nov. 19 to Nov. 26. It will be joined by The World Next Door for the same span. The currently available game is The Textorcist, a bullet-hell-meets-typing game that launched for PC at the beginning of 2019.
