First trailer for Netflix’s live-action Winx Club brings the (fairy magic) fire

Magical girl cartoon Winx Club is getting the live-action Netflix treatment, and dammit, if it ain’t about time.

Winx Club, an Italian cartoon which premiered in 2004, follows a group of fairies at the magical Alphea Academy. Main character, Bloom, thinks she’s just a regular ol’ human girl, until she uses some snazzy fire powers to help a fairy in trouble. She’s whisked away to the world of fairies and learns about her powers — and also meets new friends, cute boys, and dresses in fashionable fairy clothes. But don’t think Winx Club was just glitter and gossip; the fairies regularly faced off against evil forces and banded together to use their powers for good.

The live action Netflix series — titled Fate: The Winx Saga and starring Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Abigail Cowen as Bloom — doesn’t seem as bright and colorful as the cartoon its based on from the first trailer, but definitely brings the high stakes. It’s a bit more serious, but hey, there’s still girls coming together to save the day with superpowers, what’s not to love? Here’s how Netflix describes the series:

Fate: The Winx Saga follows the coming-of-age journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence. From creator Brian Young (The Vampire Diaries).

Fate: The Winx Saga premieres on Jan. 22, 2021.
