At the 2020 Game Awards, Hazelight offered a new trailer and release date for its upcoming co-op game, It Takes Two. We also got new details on how the game’s “Friend’s Pass” system will work. It Takes Two will come to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on March 26, 2021.
It Takes Two comes from the makers of A Way Out, the co-op only prison break game from 2018. The new game follows Cody and May, two humans-turned-dolls who are going through a rough patch in their marriage. Cody and May have to work together to repair their relationship — with the help of a talking book — and break the spell.
Being dolls, the hijinks in It Takes Two appear to take place on a Toy Story-esque scale. We see Cody and May riding spiders, battling through ball pits, and adventuring around small things. EA calls It Takes Two “genre-bending,” as we see numerous types of gameplay in the trailer, like platforming, vehicles, and puzzle solving.
One of It Takes Two’s key features is the Friend’s Pass. It Takes Two is co-op only, meaning you must find someone else to play with. To get around players having to purchase the game twice, EA and Hazelight have created a Friend’s Pass. Only one player must own It Takes Two in order for two to play. In the menu, the owner can simply invite a friend and they’ll be able to download and play without having to buy the game.
It Takes Two looks to be more whimsical than A Way Out, similar to game director Josef Fares’ previous title, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
