Sonic the Hedgehog is heading to Netflix with a new 3D animated series called Sonic Prime. Netflix and Sega announced the new series via Twitter on Thursday, saying that Sonic will make his debut on the streaming service in 2022.
“Rings? Check. Sneakers? Check. Speed? SONIC.” Netflix said in a now-deleted tweet. “SEGA’s legendary video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from @SEGA, @WildBrainHQ and @ManOfActionEnt premiering in 2022.”
Wild Brain is responsible for the Carmen Sandiego series on Netflix and The Snoopy Show for Apple TV Plus. Man of Action is known for its work on Ben 10, Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, and Mega Man: Fully Charged.
Netflix has found success bringing game properties to its service, namely with original series like Castlevania. Animated content based on The Witcher and Magic: The Gathering is also in development for the streamer.
Sonic himself found success earlier this year — yes, that was this year — with a live-action feature film, Sonic the Hedgehog. A sequel is currently in development. Sonic has also starred in multiple animated series, including 2D-animated fare like Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Underground, and Sonic X. Sega’s mascot also headlined a 3D-animated series for Cartoon Network, Sonic Boom, pictured above, from 2014 to 2017.
Update (Feb. 1, 2021): Netflix announced the title of its new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series: Sonic Prime. The 24-episode series is aimed at “kids, families, and long-time fans,” Netflix said in a news release. “The fate of a strange new multiverse rests in [Sonic’s] gloved hands,” Netflix said. “Sonic’s adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it’s a journey of self-discovery and redemption.”
