Fullbright, the independent studio behind the award-winning game Gone Home, has announced its next project. Created in partnership with Annapurna Interactive, it’s called Open Roads and will star actors Keri Russell (The Americans) and Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart). The reveal — including a teaser trailer — was made in conjunction with The Game Awards.
The game is described as “a mother-daughter road trip adventure” with a unique dialogue system. Dever will play 16-year-old Tess Devine, while Russell’s character will be named Opal. According to a news release issued on Thursday, the narrative will “discover what has been left behind in evocative places forgotten to time.”
“Together, they’ll explore a series of long-abandoned family properties, unearthing a mystery much darker than either of them imagined,” the news release continued. “Opal and Tess’s relationship has never been easy; in their search they’ll discover not just the truth they’ve been seeking, but each other.”
The project brings together a studio and a pair of actors with multiple awards and award nominations between them. Gone Home told a compelling story about queer identity, using common gaming formats and tropes to do something unexpected. That effort alone has earned the team at Fullbright plaudits from across the gaming industry — including a game of the year award from Polygon. Meanwhile, Russell won a Golden Globe for her performance in Felicity, and has been nominated for multiple Emmys for her work in The Americans. Devine, while only 23 years old, already has one Golden Globe nomination under her belt.
