Among Us is coming to Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One and Xbox Series X in 2021, Microsoft announced on Thursday, and is now available in the library of games for Xbox Game Pass for PC subscribers.
The quirky, sci-fi social deduction game — the structure resembles the paranoia faced by Wilford Brimley, Kurt Russell and others in John Carpenter’s The Thing — launched on Nintendo Switch earlier this week. It launched in 2018 on mobile platforms, and then Windows PC, but became a breakout hit this year with stuck-at-home players, Twitch streamers, and their viewers. It’s one of Polygon’s 10 best games of 2020.
Among Us is a multiplayer game for four to 10 players, pitting a group of impostors against the crew of a spaceship. They all look the same. Impostors try to kill crewmates and sabotage the ship. The crew must work together to root out and eliminate the impostors.
The game has become so popular in quarantine lifestyle that the developers at Innersloth put development of a sequel on hold, to avoid splitting up the player base. Among its many notable Twitch streamers this year was Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who used the game as a voter outreach and education tool.
InnerSloth announced at The Game Awards 2020 last week that Among Us’ new airship map would be coming soon. Players on Nintendo Switch have already figured out a way access it early.
