Geno from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but probably not in the way that fans have long hoped for. During a livestream on Thursday, Smash Bros. game director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Geno is coming to the party fighting game as downloadable content, but only in the form of a Mii Fighter costume.

Sakurai revealed Geno for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of a larger deep dive into Sephiroth, the game’s next DLC fighter. Other Final Fantasy 7 characters will also get representation in Ultimate, including Barrett, Tifa, and Aerith, but also as Mii Fighter costumes for the Gunner, Brawler, and Swordfighter, respectively. A Chocobo hat is also coming to Ultimate as part of Mii Fighter Round 8 costumes.

The addition of Geno for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Mii Fighter will be bittersweet for fans. Geno has long been a fan-requested character, one that Sakurai himself has said he considered adding to the game, and his inclusion as a Mii Fighter would likely rule him out as one of Ultimate’s remaining DLC fighters. Geno was previously available in the form of a Mii Fighter costume for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
