Spider-Man: Miles Morales is already a smooth-looking game, but a new update allows PlayStation 5 owners to push the graphics up. Released overnight, the patch introduces a third graphics setting called “Performance RT” mode to the game. This adds ray-traced graphics to the existing Performance mode to allow for 60-frames-per-second action even with ray tracing.

Until now, PS5 players had to choose between Fidelity mode, which runs in native 4K resolution at 30 fps with ray tracing, or Performance mode, which drops the resolution and visual fidelity (and eliminates ray tracing) to deliver 60 fps gameplay. The in-game description for Performance RT mode suggests that it entails some further compromises to the graphics — it adds ray tracing “by adjusting the scene resolution, reflection quality, and pedestrian density” — which makes sense.

Ray tracing is a powerful technology that renders light in a realistic manner, allowing light sources to look dramatically different when filtering in through a glass window, coming off the glow of hot and dangerous lava, or reflecting off of puddles and buildings in a crowded New York City. While it does look great, it’s a demanding effect, and many people have yet to experience the feature in its full glory. Even simple, blocky games like Minecraft suddenly need a powerful, modern graphics card to effectively introduce ray tracing.

The PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S can all deliver ray tracing, and now players with a PS5 can give the new technology a whirl with Miles Morales while enjoying 60 fps web-slinging. For more on Miles Morales, check out our review and in-depth guides.
