Top Gun: Maverick’s Super Bowl TV spot is full of Tom Cruise’s heavy breathing

Back in the cockpit

Thirty-four years after the original Top Gun, Tom Cruise returns to the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

A new TV spot for Top Gun: Maverick premiered during Super Bowl 54, more tense and tight than the first super-stunt-filled, more mood-setting trailer. Don’t get us wrong — the planes still nyoom and zoom and even maybe go kaboom! But while the planes fly around, someone — probably Maverick — struggles to breathe, while various voices set the stakes for the sequel.

In addition to Cruise reprising his role from the original, Val Kilmer returns to the role of Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. A new generation of pilots includes Miles Teller as “Rooster,” the son of Marverick’s late best friend “Goose”; Monica Barbaro as “Phoenix”; Jay Ellis as “Payback”; and Danny Ramirez as “Fanboy.” Jennifer Connelly also stars as Maverick’s love interest.

Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on June 26 in both traditional and IMAX formats.
