Death Note has returned for a special one-shot manga by series creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

The 88-page spin-off features Minoru Tanaka as the latest human who has the power of the Death Note. His IQ is high, though he’s unable to apply his brains to get good test scores. Craving apples and a cure for his boredom, Ryuk, the beloved demon from the original Death Note series, decides to pop into the human world and cause some problems on purpose.

The story takes place years after Light Yagami’s run as Kira, a powerful being who uses the Death Note to mass-murder criminals. The world has changed, and the authorities are aware of the existence of Death Notes. There are security cameras all over the place. Online messages and phone calls can be traced by the police easily. The Kira from the original Death Note series would have to use a different plan to get away with his killings in the modern day. However, Tanaka has figured out how to make the best use of the Death Note: He’s going to sell it to the highest bidder.

Death Note: Special One-Shot is available to read for free through Viz’s website now.
