The Angry Birds Movie 2 is very popular, according to Netflix — so popular, in fact, that it spent weeks on Netflix’s newly available top 10 most-viewed list. The sequel to 2016’s The Angry Birds Movie, which was based on a 2009 mobile game that basically changed the past decade’s mobile gaming landscape, didn’t make much of a splash at the box office, but it’s been an ongoing hit with Netflix subscribers.
Naturally, the one thing missing from the Angry Birds cultural monopoly was a Netflix Original project. But fret not, Angry Birds fans out there — an Angry Birds animated series is coming to Netflix. The show, titled Angry Birds: Summer Madness, has an order of 40 11-minute episodes. It will take place in the tween days of main birds Red, Bomb, and Chuck, as they spend their adolescent summer at a camp. Old characters will return, with new ones making appearances as well.
There will be mayhem, promises the news release, which seems pretty on point for these chaotic birds and their obnoxious pig foes. Also notable is a new look for the animated series — from the still image accompanying the news release, there appear to be fewer feathers, more roundness. Perfect for the cozy days of summer camp.
“Angry Birds have been a true phenomenon for kids around the world and we’re excited to bring them home to the nest at Netflix where they will be angrier and bird-ier than ever,” said Curtis Lelash, director of original animated series at Netflix, in a news release.
I’m not sure what “bird-ier” means (besides, probably, more birds), but I’m looking forward to it. We could all use a bit more birdiness in our lives.
Angry Birds: Summer Madness is set for a 2021 release. Till then, we’re just gonna watch the actually pretty good second Angry Birds movie.
