The trailer for Lord and Miller’s animated road trip comedy takes an unexpected turn

The Spider-verse duo put a twist on a familiar story

Ah, families, technology, and the generational divide! What a concept to kick off a family dinner and ensuing hijinks. Connected, the latest film from Spider-Verse and Lego Movie producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will explore this concept, but with a zany twist befitting the duo that brought Spider-Ham and “Everything is Awesome!” to screen.

Connected starts off pretty straightforward. There is a, shall we say, disconnect in the Mitchell family when it comes to phones and technology. Dad aka Rick Mitchell (Danny McBride) is pretty much against using technology, while teenage daughter Katie (Abbi Jacobson) is about to head off to college to study digital film making so accessing tech is important to her. After accidentally breaking Katie’s laptop on her last night, Rick decides to make it up to her by ... taking the family on a cross-country road trip!

About two minutes into the trailer comes the kicker: The family road trip is barreling through a robot apocalypse.

Connected is directed by former Gravity Falls writers Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe (who co-directs) and uses an art style similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Also joining the cast are Maya Rudolph, Eric Andre, and Olivia Colman.

Connected hits theaters Sept. 18.
